New Zoning Bylaw Project
The City of Burlington’s New Zoning Bylaw Project is underway. This project will create a new Zoning Bylaw that will provide a set of rules for land use planning and development across Burlington. The first draft of the new zoning bylaw for residential zones is now available for review and comment.
The new zoning bylaw will help by:
- making the rules easy to use,
- reflecting modern zoning practices,
- streamlining development approvals and
- implementing the objectives and policies of the new Official Plan (Burlington Official Plan, 2020).
Burlington’s new Zoning Bylaw will be done in phases. Phase 1 will focus on supporting more housing options in Burlington neighbourhoods.
Phase 1 – Residential Zones is part of an ongoing conversation about Burlington’s community housing needs and will help move forward:

This work is Enabling More Housing in the City of Burlington by supporting Four Units ‘as-of-right’. This means property owners can have up to four housing units on their property, if all the criteria is met.
We hope this helps residents build Additional Residential Units (ARUs) in various neighbourhoods to add more housing options.
