City Wide Patio Program

The City of Burlington has created a set of Design Guidelines for Patios on Public Lands. These new guidelines:
- provide design direction to business operators,
- include accessibility requirements for all patios,
- provide Information on alcohol service and AGCO regulations,
- include instructions of how operators can apply with step-by-step information on how applications will be processed,
- provide guidance related to fencing, lighting, umbrellas and canopies,
- include Fire Safety Requirements and
- include an application checklist.
We introduced patios in 2015 under the Pop-Up Patio Program in the downtown core. During the City’s COVID-19 response, the Temporary Patio Program was approved by Council and ran until October 2023. On Feb. 13, 2024, City Council approved staff report PL-05-24 and recommendation to establish a permanent city-wide seasonal outdoor patio program beginning in 2024.
