Since the City’s first Community Trails Strategy in 2015, Burlington has experienced significant growth and change. Active transportation and recreation have continued to be a priority with the adoption of the Active Transportation Network (2023), the City’s Cycling Master Plan (2019), the Live and Play Plan (2024), and the Integrated Mobility Plan (2021).

As the city continues to grow and evolve, it is important to update the Community Trails Strategy to:

  • Align with other municipal policies, plans, and priorities

  • Provide thoughtful and strategic enhancement to the existing trail system

  • Leverage trail planning and design to enhance user experience

  • Provide guidance on short and long-term opportunities for implementation

The updated strategy will help to establish a trail system that reflects modern needs, best practices, and community values while also setting the City up for future coordination and collaboration.
