Why is the City going forward with an on-street parking permit program?

There are many neighbourhoods throughout the City of Burlington that have smaller driveways and therefore need on-street parking. Many residents have been requesting this program and the need has increased with more people working from home and the rise in multi-generational home resulting in more cars per household.

If a number of people do not support this initiative, why is the city going forward with it?

While we realize not everyone supports on-street parking permits, there are many residents who do support the program and have been requesting it.

Our extensive research shows that a number of our neighbouring municipalities run similar programs very successfully. We expect our program to solve current parking challenges for residents and make for safer neighbourhoods.

How can plows clear snow if there are cars parked on the road?

When the City declares a snow event, there is no street parking of any kind allowed. This currently includes parking exemptions and will include parking permits.

If you allow permit parking, how will emergency vehicles access these streets?

Transportation staff work with our Fire Department to restrict parking and stopping areas to make sure fire trucks and other emergency services are able to get around our neighbourhoods and residents’ homes. We will continue to work with them to make sure that parking permit areas maintain all emergency vehicle access.

Why can’t people who need extra parking just park/park overnight in a City park or school parking lot?

Under municipal bylaw, parking is not permitted in municipal parks.

There are exceptions where we may allow parking in municipal parks but this is not a solution to neighbourhood parking needs.

School parking lots are private property and owned by the local school board. You should never park on private property without permission.

What should I do if I am renovating or have guests staying overnight and need to park my car(s) on the road?

For short term on-street parking, residents have 15-days per calendar year that they can register to use for short term on-street parking for guests or extra vehicles. Please fill out the parking exemption form on our website.

With the new program, will parking be assigned or first come, first serve?

When the On-Street Parking Program is launched, parking will be first come, first serve. It will not be assigned.
